In general, articles are used in the same way as in English. However, there are some cases in which article usage differs in the two languages.
No article in Dutch, (in)definite article in English
- Professions
Hij is tandarts. | He is a dentist.
Mijn oma is econoom. | My grandmother is an economist.
- Musical instruments
Zij speelt piano. | She plays the piano.
Ik speel gitaar. | I play the guitar.
Definite article in Dutch, no article in English
- Seasons
In de winter draag ik warme kleren. | In winter, I wear warm clothes.
In de herfst zie je overal van die mooie kleuren. | In autumn, you see beautiful colours everywhere.
- Languages
Kun je het ook in het Nederlands zeggen? | Can you also say it in Dutch?
Het boek is alleen in het Engels verkrijgbaar. | The book is only available in English.
We generally use 'het' only after prepositions, usually after 'in': "Can you say it in Dutch?" becomes "Kun je het in het Nederlands zeggen" but "Do you speak Dutch" is "Spreek je Nederlands?"

Je ziet de sterren het duidelijkst in de woestijn. | You see see the stars most clearly in the desert.
