There are a few diminutives that do not follow the normal rules:

(not: gatje) | the hole
het glas | het gl aa sje
(not: glasje) | the glass
de jongen | het jong e tje
(not: jongentje) | the boy
het pad | het p aa dje
(not: padje) | the path
het schip | het sch ee pje
(not: schipje) | the ship
het vat | het v aa tje
(not: vatje) | the barrel
But:
het handvat | het handv a tje
(regular) | the little handle
Different meanings
Sometimes, the meaning of a noun changes when it is written in a diminutive form:
de schotel | the dish | het schotel tje | the saucer
de kaart | the card | het kaart je | the ticket
de gein | the fun | het gein tje | the joke
het plezier | the pleasure, joy | het plezier tje | the favour
het ijs | the ice | het ijs je | the icecream
The nouns meisje (girl) and etentje (dinner-party) only exists in their diminutive forms.
