The letter 'e'

A2Spelling And Pronunciation · lesson 16 of 28

The letter _e_ does not behave quite the same as the other vowels. There are two ways in which it distinguishes itself from the rest:

  1. If the letter e is unstressed, it is pronounced neither long nor short: It is a [mute e](#/lesson/SpellingAndPronunciation.17).
  2. The letter e is the only vowel that is allowed to be doubled at the end of a word.( [double ee](#/lesson/SpellingAndPronunciation.18)).
