Some auxiliary verbs cannot be followed by a bare infinitive: we need to place the preposition _te_ before the infinitive.
In English, we have the same phenomenon. We say "I want _to_ sing" not "I want sing". On the other hand, we do not say "I can to sing" because 'can' is normally followed by a bare infinitive.

All in all, there are six situations where we use _te_ \+ infinitive:

[durven, hebben, hoeven, komen](#/lesson/Verbs.Au09): "Ze durft te zingen."
[that-verbs](#/lesson/Verbs.Au10): "Hij zegt te komen."
[om-verbs](#/lesson/Verbs.Au11): "Ze proberen (om) te vliegen."
