Er, hier, and daar (EHD)

B1Word Order · lesson 10 of 69

Going from left to right, we will begin with er/hier/daar, or using the first letters of these words: EHD.

It will not come as a surprise that _er, hier_ and _daar_ are the only three words that we can use for this component. Sitting at the beginning of the middle part, they can be used in different ways:

. | location | replacing a pronoun

er | unstressed here / there | replacing _het_

used in the sense of ['of it' or 'of them'](#/lesson/WordOrder.39)

hier | here | replacing [_dit_ or _deze_](#/lesson/Pronouns.De04)

daar | there | replacing [_dat_ or _die_](#/lesson/Pronouns.De04)

Unlike _hier_ and _daar, er_ does not have an English equivalent. The word _er_ can have a variety of functions. It appears so frequently in the Dutch language, that I dedicated a [separate section](#/lesson/WordOrder.36) to it.
